Eligibility: The child must be three or four by September 1st of each year. The family must meet the income guidelines which is 100% of poverty. This program does allow for 10% over income.
Services Provided: 1. Early Childhood Education - Ensuring children enrolled in Head Start begin school ready to learn is a program goal. Activities are directed toward skill and knowledge domains and domain elements. Indicators of each child's progress are incorporated in the program's annual self-assessment.
2. Health - Provides an organized health program that includes screening, growth assessment, vision, hearing, dental, and immunization, and encourages parents to become involved in the health care process relating to their child.
3. Special Needs - Provides a special education program for the ten percent disabled children enrolled in Head Start. Coordinates efforts with the public school system and other community agencies to facilitate continued support after preschool.
4. Nutrition - Provides nutritious meals and assists the children in participating in the food experience by offering family style environment. Preparations of food to meet family needs, guidance in home and money management, and help in consumer education so that they can be responsible for the nutritional health of the family.
5. Social Services - Provides enrollment to eligible children and achieves parent participation in the center, home program, and related activities. Assists the family in its own efforts to improve the condition and quality of family life.
6. Parent Involvement - Provides a program that recognizes parents as the prime educators of their children. As contributors to the Head Start program, they are involved in the decision making process of the program. Their participation in the classroom and the other activities increases self-confidence and family involvement.
7. Full Day Care - In addition to the traditional 1/2 day Head Start Preschool, Salt Lake CAP Head Start provides high quality, extended full-day childcare for working families. Daily rates for this service are very low; tuition costs may be aided by State Child Care Assistance administered by the Department of Workforce Services (DWS).
