Programs that provide reading and writing instruction for individuals of all ages who are unable to read or write at a functional level. Some programs interpret literacy more broadly and also help people develop speaking, computation and problem solving skills with the objective of ensuring that they develop levels of proficiency they will need to become self sufficient and function well in society. (AIRS HH 4500) Included are English as a Second Language and other similar language-specific programs.

Tutoring in reading is offered to Mapleton residents through this program. The program accepts both adults and children and the goal is to increase reading skills to the desired grade level. The student must be reading below grade level to qualify for this help. There is a one-time charge of $20.00 (Residents) or $30.00 (Non-Residents) to sign-up, but there is no charge for the tutoring hours. A reading assessment test is given to students to determine grade level at the beginning and they are then assigned to a volunteer tutor. The tutoring occurs twice a week for an hour each time. Hours of tutoring may vary according to school and summer schedules and are determined by the tutor and the student.
